About DTC Franklin Gothic
Franklin Gothic is a sans-serif typeface designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1902 and is one of over 200 typefaces designed by this legendary American type designer. First released by American Type Founders (ATF), Franklin Gothic was originally designed as a Roman typeface with a single weight and only two variations in width. Additional variants were added as Franklin Gothic became popular. A condensed design was drawn in 1905, and an extra condensed in 1906. Five years later Benton added an italic to the family, and two years after that a shaded font was offered. In 1980, International Typeface Corporation (ITC) released a new and updated 4 weight version with complementary italics of Franklin Gothic designed by Victor Caruso. This version had a slightly enlarged x-height and a moderately condensed lowercase alphabet. In 1991, ITC commissioned the Font Bureau in Boston to create condensed, compressed and extra compressed versions of ITC Franklin Gothic. These fonts include complementary italics except for the extra compressed. Other foundries also released their own versions of Franklin Gothic over the years including Adobe, Monotype, Paratype, URW, E+F, ATF Type, Bitstream and others. The design is now offered in many font file formats and in many language formats including Central European, Cyrillic and Greek.
Currently, FontHaus carries over 240 Franklin Gothic styles and versions of this classic.
