...a good pairingINTRODUCING three new foundries from
Las Vegas, Nevada, Matosinhos Portugal and Kitchner, Ontario Canada:
Astigmatic
The founder of the Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute, Professor Brian Bonislawsky, is the descendant of a very interesting family including inventors, tea entrepreneurs, and the founder of the Hazenfabulpopinziegus Soap empire in Munich, Germany. Although his family had little to do with type and type design, Brian was always more fascinated by letter shapes than reading. He studied typography and design at the Brown University, RISD, and in England where he earned his doctorate in the typographical sciences. While there, he was notorious for examining typographic specimens at such length that he developed an acute straining of his left eye and a minor astigmatism. When word of his condition spread, he was known to his colleagues as One Eye, or "Stiggy" as he'd been jokingly referred. Upon his return to the US, he began the Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute. Today, Professor Bonislawsky lives and works in Las Vegas, Nevada.

DSType
"Typographers often experience this moment: you see a 'text' typeface that appears too quirky to ever be usable for setting body copy. But, upon seeing the specimen in print, you are pleasantly surprised with the face’s stability and workmanship."
"Esta is one of these. (pictured left) If Esta's warm and curvy teardrops don't win you over, its versatility will.
Esta is economical and humble when set small, but its strokes and counterspaces can also dance beautifully
— in a postmodernist sort of way, believe it or not — when set large. While Esta may not sit comfortably in a Leo Tolstoy novel, it can add life to many kinds of texts."
— Bram Pityo, "Favorite fonts of 2006"
Typographica,
a journal of typography featuring news, observations, and open commentary on fonts and typographic
design.
DSType is headquartered in Matosinhos, Portugal and is owned by Dino dos Santos. Dino has been designing custom typefaces for magazines and corporations since 1994.

Typadelic
Just north of the US border in Kitchner, Ontario Canada (a few miles west of Toronto), Typadelic is a small, one-woman foundry offering a very nice range of distinctive typefaces including many useful and friendly scripts.
"I really became interested in typography and letters as an art form while in college for graphic design and gained invaluable experience when I was employed as a typesetter with a greeting card company for several years. There weren't many foundries out there offering the type of fonts we needed so I began experimenting with digital type design. I like some of my early efforts and was intrigued by the potential of designing type for commercial use."
"On a bit of a lark, I sent my first complete font, Sketchley, to Bitstream, just to see 'what would happen'.
Surprisingly, they accepted it for inclusion in their 2002 font collection. It also was one of the winners of
an ATypI type design competition, held in Moscow that same year. At this point I thought there might be a place
for me in the type design community, so, I began my own company, 'Typadelic', in the spring of 2002."
