Featured NEW Font: MVB Solano™

From Mark van Bronkhorst, MVB Solano Gothic is a new font family designed as a display face for the City of Albany, California, located on the San Francisco Bay facing the Golden Gate Bridge and surrounded by the Berkeley hills. The City's character is perhaps defined by its 1920's bungalows and its enlightened, small-town community within an otherwise major urban area (20 minutes to downtown San Francisco, traffic permitting).

The Solano Gothic fonts, named for the City's main street, needed to work on signage in proximity to older buildings, in contemporary settings, and for general print and web use. Rather than creating a neutered design to cover all bases, Mr. van Bronkhorst chose to develop a simple, strong, condensed face that would offer flexibility of style by providing both retro and neutral forms.

The basic "Bold" and "Bold Retro" fonts offer upper and lowercase forms, with figures designed for upper and lowercase settings (figures are not full-cap height). The same figures are provided with small caps (SC), and align to small cap height. For all-cap settings requiring figures of full-cap height, there are the "Caps" fonts. An alternate tabular "1" is provided in all fonts so that both fitted and tabular settings of figures are possible (access to alternate characters subject to system or application support).

The Pro versions simplify matters. They combine upper and lowercase forms, small caps, various figures, fractions, superior/inferior figures; offer automated features (subject to application support); and provide extended language support.

Archive Type specializes in old typefaces found in old prints, books and samples. Typefaces are reproduced as they appeared in print. In order to preserve the original feel of the typefaces, no additional characters were added to the originals therefore most of the fonts consist of just the basic character set: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numerals and basic punctuation. Some of the display fonts are without numerals or lower case characters (as they were originally never created). The founder of Archive Type lives and works in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
